We spoke with MakersHub about bringing financial controls earlier into the purchasing process—and making the path from purchase order to general ledger more connected.
For someone hearing about MakersHub for the first time—what do you actually do, in plain English?
MakersHub is a purchase-order and accounts payable automation platform that connects purchasing requests, approvals, and invoices in one workflow. It helps businesses approve spending before it’s committed, match invoices to purchase orders, and send accurately coded information into their existing accounting systems.
What’s breaking (or slowing down) for finance teams today—and why is it becoming harder to ignore?
Purchasing doesn’t always happen where the accounting team works. In construction, manufacturing, distribution, and the trades, employees may be ordering materials from a job site or shop floor, with approvals scattered across emails, texts, and paper records.
That disconnect creates problems downstream. Finance may not know about a purchase until the invoice arrives, leaving the team to verify approvals, investigate discrepancies, and correct coding errors. It also limits visibility into committed spending, making it harder to understand what’s coming before it appears in the books.
Who tends to get the most value from this—and where does it typically click fastest?
Small and mid-sized businesses with decentralized purchasing are a natural fit, especially in construction, HVAC, manufacturing, distribution, and food and agriculture. The common challenge is that the people making purchases aren’t necessarily the people responsible for accounting.
MakersHub also works with bookkeeping practices, client accounting services (CAS) firms, and fractional CFO firms. For these providers, a consistent AP process across clients can reduce repetitive administrative work and make financial information available sooner.
If a finance team started using your approach tomorrow, where would they feel the impact first?
Purchase-order approvals are a practical starting point. Employees can request purchases from the field, route them to the appropriate approver, and establish a record of authorized spending before an order is placed.
When invoices arrive, matching them against approved POs can help identify discrepancies, duplicates, or unauthorized purchases before payment. Automated invoice capture and coding further reduce manual entry, while connected approval records make it easier for accounting teams to understand each transaction without chasing supporting information.
How does this fit into the existing finance tech stack—and how does it hold up as the business grows?
MakersHub is designed to sit between purchasing activity and the accounting system, adding a layer of spend control without requiring businesses to replace their general ledger. Approved purchasing and invoice information can flow into the existing accounting workflow, keeping financial records connected to the decisions behind them. Specific integration capabilities depend on the accounting environment.
As businesses add buyers, approvers, vendors, or locations, purchasing workflows can expand to accommodate greater activity. Accounting firms can also apply a repeatable process across additional clients. The broader idea is to keep purchasing controls consistent as operations grow, rather than allowing more transactions to create more approval chasing and reconciliation work.
